Andy Mattern’s photography is both conceptual and visually delightful. When I had the opportunity to design a book from his photo series Average Subject / Medium Distance, we were both hoping to create something more than a reproduction of the series, taking full advantage of the special properties that a book affords. this is the best kind of design project, because it was really a collaboration between two friends. I would throw out ideas, and Andy would plunge in and produce new work to fit the challenge. The result was better than either of us could have anticipated and really reflects both of our personalities, while championing Andy's singular approach to the medium.
